Debbie Bliss Magazine Spring/Summer 2010

Debbie Bliss Magazine Spring/Summer 2010

£4.50

This is the fourth magazine by Debbie Bliss and once again she has produced a beautiful issue to get us into that springtime feel. She says, "The new Spring issue of my magazine has a personal feel to it as last year my daughter Nell and I stayed with friends on Long Island and the beautiful light, relaxed ambience and stunning views inspired the fashion feature Creme de la Creme, relaxed knits for the perfect weekend, in classic shades of cream and stone. In keeping with the coastal theme the home section Hamptons Home has nautical style throws, cushions, bunting and a great carry bag for the beach. Top Tanks features sophisticated knits which are perfect to give a touch of class to your holiday wardrobe. In contrast to the pale beauty of the East Coast we have Moroccan Sunset, a collection of knits shot in the sun drenched desert of North Africa, in my earth and people friendly organic Fairtrade yarn Eco Aran. I have also launched a finer version of the aran weight Eco Baby which is soft against a child's skin and therefore perfect for Pure and Simple, four easy knits in summery sorbet shades for toddlers. There are 35 knits, 18 new designs and some of the most popular styles from previous collections plus the regular features and new ones such as a fascinating article on knitting in Elizabethan England." Eco Aran and Eco Baby are both available from Texere as well as Debbie’s classic tweeds for sumptuous wintery knitwear.

The Yarn Book

The Yarn Book

£15.99

Penny Walsh. If you ever wanted to know what a snarl or a gimp is, what the difference between woollen and worsted spinning is or what mercerising and sizing mean then this is the book for you.
Yarns are an integral part of any work done in the field of textiles - whether it be weaving, sewing, dyeing or knitting. The ply, tensile strength, weight, elasticity, water-, heat- and shrink-resistance of yarns all have an important impact on the final result of any work.
In this book Penny Walsh explores yarns, their history, production methods, fibre content and the new advances that are constantly being made.
She also provides practical instructions for making your own threads and yarns, with detailed making sequences and helpful step-by-step illustrations.
The book is illustrated throughout with diagrams and photographs of how yarns are spun, plus images of manufacturing processes and finished yarns and fabrics. Whilst this is a very useful book for anyone wanting to spin their own yarns it is also a fascinating read and an excellent source book for anyone interested in yarns - whether buying, dyeing, weaving or knitting etc - invaluable!

Union Jack Bag Pattern

Union Jack Bag Pattern

£2.00

What better way to show your dedication to British farmers, sheep and yarns than by making a union flag bag?! The red, white and blue really says everything you need it to say, but if you fancy being more individual play around with subtle or wacky colour and texture combinations. Felting is a fun way to transform soft yarns into practical accessories by just throwing them in the washing machine! Texere Troon Tweed is spun in oil, so knits very easily and totally changes when washed. Texere Airedale Aran is softer, without flecks and felts even easier. Try combining the two for unusual textures & effects.
This pattern has two designs included - red-white-blue & Green style bags

Leather Thonging

A popular craft product in real leather to complement our leather offcuts. We have recently sourced round, smooth thronging in addition to the flat suede we have been selling. The flat leather which has a cut, square edge has a soft, natural suede appearance and is 3mm wide. It isn't shiny or plasticated cotton. The round thronging has a natural sheen (the black being slightly shinier than the naturals) and is available in 1mm and 2mm widths. An ideal product for jewellery, beading, braiding, plaiting into belts, embellishing leather bags and many other leather crafts. Also excellent for embellishing re-enactment or period costumes, leather archery equipment, Native American costumes and jewellery.

Bag handles

We have the perfect handles to compliment every type of bag you could wish to create whether it be knitted, felted or stitched. They are a really professional way to finish off your creations in a fantastic range of shapes, sizes and materials. The handles are beaded, bamboo and plastic with metal clasps and attachments. There are lots of designs to choose from including colourful and strong plastic handles, flexible and glamorous beaded options to rustic and ethnic bamboos. As some of the handles are almost transparent we have placed in a blue background during photography so you can see the clear shape and design. Some sets of handles require clasps to attachment them to your bag and these are indicated as **.

Umbrella swifts or skein holders are an excellent accessory for anyone who needs to hold a skein of yarn whilst winding it onto a ball - saving lots of aching arms from husbands and children! Their main purpose is for taking yarn in its skein form and holding it whilst you wind it into a ball - saving time and tangles. The swift clamps easily to a table and enables you to place skeins of almost any circumference around it as it has a clever locking device to position it wherever you need it, it then rotates smoothly as you wind the yarn into a ball. The maximum circumference of a skein is 150cm or approx 60 inches. The swift is made from metal with a plastic coating covering the areas that come into contact with the yarn. It comes in a handy plastic box keeping it clean and compact.

Mechanical Knitting Mill
Mechanical Knitting Mill
The mechanical mill is a speedier version of the knitting dollies. Four hooks with latches that open and close are wound in a circular motion - they catch the yarn to knit the braid, mimicking the action of the dollies. Space-dyed yarns work well in all the gadgets and create lovely blended colour changes as there are no knots or joins to contend with. Fairly smooth yarns work the best in the mill as textured yarns can catch on the hooks, but once you're up and running you can generate long lengths of braid in next to no time. These newly created chainette lengths can then be used as yarns ready to knit into chunky handbags and accessories.

Flower Loom
Flower Loom
This is one of the best craft products you will ever come across and if you've never used a flower loom before you could quite easily get addicted! The basic premise is that you can make "flowers" or "rosettes" by winding yarn round the pegs of the loom. You then stitch through the yarns on the loom, which holds everything together, pop the whole thing off and you have your flower. The beauty of this loom, unlike rigid flower looms, is that the pegs are interchangeable so you can create four different sizes and each of them can be round or square.

Ball Winder
Ball Winder
Ball or wool winders are an excellent accessory for anyone who needs to wind yarn down from a large cone or skein onto a ball. They work particularly well with our umbrella swifts and come with fully illustrated instructions. They are very useful for spinners who need to wind their hand spun yarn into a neat ball or for anyone who has hand dyed yarn and needs to get it back into a neat ball shape rather than by winding it round their hands! The shape of the ball created is flat and almost cylindrical. This means you can work straight from the centre of the ball very easily and even knit straight onto a knitting machine as the tension is so even. The winder is made of sturdy plastic and is easily clamped onto a table or worktop. Depending on the texture you can probably wind about 200g of yarn onto a ball.
