Magic Plus by Bergere de France Knitting Pattern - 286.57

2.50

What a fabulous design this is, knitted in Magic + aran by Bergere de France. The poncho element creates swing and drape, however the addition of sleeves adds a practicality that you don't get in a regular poncho! The fabulous cabling and cosy roll neck have made this the bestselling knitting pattern Bergere de France have ever created and we can see why. Knit from Magic + which is a standard aran weight yarn available in some contemporary and classic shades, although you could use any aran yarn, just check your tension first. Try Bonus Aran Tweed for a tweedy, budget yarn or Inti Alpaca for a really luxurious version.

(Please note that this design is also featured in Creations 2011/2012 along with 52 other patterns for just £6.95).

Flower Loom

Flower Loom

9.90

This is one of the best craft products you will ever come across and if you've never used a flower loom before you could quite easily get addicted! The basic premise is that you can make "flowers" or "rosettes" by winding yarn round the pegs of the loom. You then stitch through the yarns on the loom, which holds everything together, pop the whole thing off and you have your flower. The beauty of this loom, unlike rigid flower looms, is that the pegs are interchangeable so you can create four different sizes and each of them can be round or square.

I can't find what I'm looking for - help!
See our Site Guide for hints and tips for searching through our 2500 products!

What is the difference between a Regular Yarn, a Special Purchase and a Sale yarn?
Regular Yarns - These are repeatable stock and branded yarns, available for as long as our suppliers produce them (dye lots may vary over time).

Special Purchase - Stock and branded lines where limited amounts are available. Many of these lines are unrepeatable and are marked with . Please make sure you order sufficient quantities to complete your project, because when these yarns have sold out, they cannot be repeated.

Sale Clearance - Guaranteed to be unrepeatable. All clearance yarns have been dramatically reduced in price to reflect their position (dye lots may vary within batches).

Can I request a particular dye lot?
Yes. When you are checking out there is a box asking if you need a specific dye lot. Type in the lot, telling us which yarn it refers to and we will endeavour to match it. If we don't have that lot we will send the closest unless otherwise advised.

Where can I find stock levels of yarns?
If you need to know the quantity of a Sale or Special Purchase yarn before ordering please call or email us first so we can check. Alternatively order the amount you need and we will contact you if we cannot fulfil this quantity and offer a refund or replacement.

All branded yarns are regular, repeatable yarns, unless otherwise stated. Occasionally colours may be discontinued by our suppliers at very short notice before we have chance to update the website. Order the amount you need and we will contact you if we cannot fulfil this quantity and give you an idea of delivery times.

What do nm, cc and wc mean?
These are yarn counts and there are many systems which have been used over the years, both direct and indirect systems. We only use indirect systems which are based on the number of lengths per unit mass. The following details refer to single, unplied yarns.

cc Cotton Count the number of 840yd units in 1lb of yarn
wc Worsted Count the number of 560yd units in 1lb of yarn
nm Metric Count the number of 1000m units in 1kg of yarn

To give you an example - Regency Silk is 60/2nm. The single yarn has 60 x 1000m per kg i.e. 60,000m per 1000g - this would be 60/1nm. But Regency is 60/2, the /2 relates to the number of ends (folds), so Regency has 2 ends. By doubling the thickness of the yarn you've halved the meterage. So 60,000m of single equals 30,000m of double yarn per 1000g. The same theory applies to a 3 fold (/3), 4 fold (/4) yarn etc - the more ends that are twisted together the higher the /number.

What is the difference between 4ply and 4 fold?
Knitting and crochet yarn manufacturers use 2ply, 3ply, 4ply etc as terms to describe the actual thickness of a yarn. Yarns for weavers and braiders tend to use 2 fold, 3 fold, 4 fold to describe the amounts of ends per yarn.

A 4ply yarn will generally have approx 350m to 100g, but it can have as many ends (of single yarns twisted together) as necessary to reach that thickness from 2 ends to maybe 16 ends. These ends will still give a yarn of approx the same meterage and thickness.

A 4 fold yarn can be any weight, but will always have 4 ends plied together. A 2ply yarn could have 4 ends and have 800m per 100g or a chunky yarn could have 4 ends and just 100m per 100g.

I've got an American knitting/crochet pattern - how do I know which yarn to buy?
The yarn on my knitting/crochet pattern is discontinued - can you suggest a replacement?
On the whole as long as you have the yardage/meterage per ounces/grams you can do a fairly simple calculation to work out what you need. For 30 years or more the UK yarn industry has used the metric system, so that's the easiest starting point.

Multiply ounces by 28.35 to give grams. Multiply yards by 0.914 to give metres.

Our example has 2oz with 120yd per ball, which converts to 56.7g to 109.72m. Once you have this amount you can then use the table below to work out whether you need a 4ply, DK or aran etc. As you will see it falls into the DK range. To be absolutely sure look at the gauge or tension on the pattern and the needle size to check they correspond.

Alternatively if the pattern shows the tension and needle size, follow the same table to work out the most suitable yarn. So a tension of 14 stitches on 6.5mm needles would need a chunky yarn.

How can I view the items on Ravelry without getting the login page?
Unfortunately you can't! Registering with Ravelry.com is very easy, it's free and gives you access to a whole knit and crochet community that's well worth joining, even if it's just to view what other knitters have made with our products!

How can I work out how much yarn I need to make a rug?
If you are latch-hooking a rug these are our estimations. They are based on trial and error and customers' comments, and are to be used only as a guide. We would always advise buying extra yarn to ensure you have enough to complete your project. Texere Yarns Ltd cannot take any responsibility if the required yarn/colour has sold out.

A rug requires a minimum of between 9oz / 250g and 12oz / 340g per square foot (approx), whether making velvet or shaggy pile rugs (based on using 3 holes per inch canvas - whether interlock or rya). The quantity depends on the density of pile and the height of pile you require.

VELVET PILE RUG (use interlock canvas)
When making a velvet pile rug using a 6ply wool (such as New Fez) and normally one thread per hole will be used. These will be cut to between 2½" and 2¾" or 6.5cm to 7cm.

When making a velvet pile rug using a carpet yarn (such as Axminster or Berber) normally two or three threads will be knotted together in each hole. These will be cut to 2½" to 2¾" or 6.5 to 7cm.

SHAG PILE RUGS (use rya canvas)
If you were to use interlock canvas and every hole were to be filled your rug would be very expensive and very heavy to lift! So rya canvas is produced with every other hole blocked by the manufacturer creating a stable canvas.

When making a shag pile rug using a carpet yarn (such as Axminster or Berber) normally two or three threads will be knotted together in each hole. These will be cut to between 6"and 6½" or 16cm.

Traditionally 6ply rug wool isn't usually used to make a shag pile rugs as it doesn't produce such a hairy, shaggy effect. However, it will be perfect to produce a chunky, textured effect and give a very contemporary result.

Why don't samples of Axminster rug yarn in your catalogue match the colours on the wesbite?
Whilst Axminster is a regular yarn and available in a wide range of colours, these colours are unique and frequently changing. We show a good selection of colours on our website, but sometimes the colours on the shelf may sell out and the replacement shade can be slightly different. Rather than changing the website each time we receive a delivery it remains constant, whereas we can replace or add a yarn more easily to the catalogue. If the colour you order is no longer available we will send the best possible match unless otherwise instructed. If you need an accurate match and cannot see the right colour on the site please send us a snippet of what you require and we will do our best to match it.

How much do you charge for postage?
Postage rates vary according to the weight of an order. Please see "Postage and Packaging" within our terms and conditions.

I need my yarn REALLY quickly, what do I do?
Firstly you need to place your order before 2pm and choose Special Delivery as your "Class of Service". For more details about Special Delivery see "Postage & Packaging" and "Delivery Information" in our Terms & Conditions. Special Delivery does not apply on a Saturday, so if you need yarn sending on a Friday to arrive on Saturday please call the office to discuss options. Again, please ring as early as you can to give us the opportunity to pick, check and pack the order correctly.

Can I pay for my order by cheque or postal order?
Yes, however, you can calculate the total of your order by using the website. Simply add all the items you require to the shopping basket, select your postage destination and rate and update the basket to calculate the total. Print out this page and post it to us with your cheque made out to Texere Yarns Ltd. The cheque must be a sterling cheque - we cannot accept cheques in any other currency.

I've ordered too much yarn, can I return the spare?
We would always encourage you to order more yarn than you think you will need for all projects, to ensure matching dye lots etc. However, if the yarn you have ordered is a discontinued yarn or a sale yarn we cannot accept returns of these yarns, so please decide carefully before you order. If you have spares of a repeatable product, but it's after the 14 days stated in our Returns Policy please contact us by phone or email and we will make a decision based on the yarn/quantity/length of time etc.
