Texere Troon Aran Wool Felted Bag & Purse Knitting Pattern 004

Texere Troon Aran Wool Felted Bag & Purse Knitting Pattern 004

£1.50

Here is a knitting pattern for a felted bag and purse using Texere Troon Tweed aran. The yarn is used double for the bag meaning you'll have it knitted up in no time and the little purse only uses one ball - so great, quick gifts. The transformation of the non-felted bag when you take it out of the washing machine is brilliant and the rigidity of the bag means it doesn't even need lining! All the shades of Troon are marled or tweedy, so even if you don't want stripes you could achieve a lovely textured effect with very little effort.

Freeform Crochet & Beyond by Renate Kirkpatrick
Freeform Crochet & Beyond by Renate Kirkpatrick
Waterstones said; This is a wonderful book! I love the pictorial crochet cover photo, and on first flicking through the pages was disappointed to see a collection of instructions for motifs rather than anything so complex. However, as soon as I sat down to read the book, I was immediately drawn in by the author's friendly, engaging style of writing. She has a wonderfully refreshing attitude: if you're not sure about something, try it anyway! If it doesn't work, try something else! She is not prescriptive in terms of yarns etc, and actively encourages the reader to experiment with colour, texture, and design. Renate provides information in terms of stitches and motifs and how to use them, alongside personal anecdotes and advice, and galleries of completed pieces showing the amazing effects you can achieve. The way she explains as she goes along makes everything seem achievable, no matter your level of experience. £21.99

Freeform Knitting & Crochet by Jenny Dowde
Freeform Knitting & Crochet by Jenny Dowde
Reader review; When I started using this book to learn new stitches and get an idea of what freeform is really all about, I was amazed to discover that here at last was a way in which I could be creative without having to be gifted, or neat, or even particularly knowledgeable. With just the very basic knitting and/or crocheting skills, this book shows you how to make pieces of fabric to delight the soul. People like me who cannot maintain a constant tension, or achieve a neat edge, or even finish a row with the same number of stitches with which I started, might even possibly be at an advantage. With this book's help all you really need is a good idea of what colours you like to see together, and the ability to throw off the shackles of knitting and crochet convention! It is an absolute delight and the most rewarding craft book I have ever owned. £19.99

Finishing Techniques for Crochet by Betty Barnden
Finishing Techniques for Crochet by Betty Barnden
As with the knitting version this book doesn't have the title or the cover to have you adding a copy into your shopping basket and requesting "special delivery" - but it's a fantastic book! There's no point crocheting fantastic pieces of a garment and then making a hash of sewing them up, not knowing what blocking means or struggling to fit a zip. If you're going to put in all the effort into making, then this is the book you need to finish your crochet in a professional manner. Most patterns readily available to crocheters give instructions on how to crochet the item, but not necessarily how to finish it. The techniques involved in finishing a garment successfully, from choosing the right border to adding a fastening, take a bit of time to master and achieve instinctively. In awareness of this, this book provides practical advice and step-by-step instructions for every sort of finishing technique. The reader can thus build up a store of effective methods with which to personalise and add flair to their work, whether it's adding a border or embellishment, or embroidering and adding decorative elements. The final section of the book enables you to put the techniques into practice using 10 classic design projects for garments, accessories and articles for the home, with full instructions on how to customise them to your own individual style. It also contains a handy directory of 20 borders, edgings and frills. Go on - stick a copy in your basket! £9.99

One Skein
One Skein
Leigh Radford 30 Quick Projects to Knit and Crochet. This is a great book full of easy, stylish designs that just use one skein of yarn.
Obviously skeins are different sizes and sometimes the larger sizes will require some extra yarn, but for the most part you just need 1 x 50g or 1 x 100g of yarn.
This is an American book and therefore uses American yarns, but as many of the projects are simple items it isn't absolutely crucial to get exactly the correct yarn. As long as the meterage of the alternative yarn and the fibre content are about the same you should be fine (please give us a call if you need help).
The patterns include scarves, gloves, hats, socks and legwarmers; items for baby; bags and purses; lovely felted bowls, cushions, lavender sachets. Plus there is a handy "stash" section where the items are slightly larger, but you use up odds and ends of yarn.
This is a great book to either give as a gift to a busy knitter friend, or to buy for yourself and make quick and simple gifts. £14.99

Useful tips will help you to acquire new crochet skills and a quick and easy technique section will make complex looking effects achievable. The yarns used are all DK, aran or chunky etc, rather than specific brands so it is very easy to substitute any standard yarns to knit to the patterns. I have already made a purse and a bag from this book and was surprised just how many of the other items I wanted to make as well. I think the beauty of the designs here is that nothing is too wacky or impractical, but they are funky and contemporary and you could imagine wanting to wear or give any of the items. A great all round book - highly recommended! I know this what I have said for the knitting book, but this crochet book is just as good. £10.99
